Where in the world is Antigua?
If you’ve read my welcome blog post you probably noticed that I mentioned living in a UNESCO site. Well, this is it! Beautiful Antigua Guatemala.
It is a small historical town from Central America’s colonial days that almost looks as if it is frozen in time. It also happens to be filled with Guatemalans from nearby towns rushing to work, immigrants from all over the world who want to replicate their hometown down here and complain about our culture all the time (why did they even move here if they don’t like us?), tourists- locals and foreign— looking for the coolest photo spot, the trendiest restaurant, a fun night out, or just a parking spot (it can get quite challenging, especially on weekends).
However, if you look closely, you will also find a dying breed of local families who have proudly called themselves Antigueños for generations. This ever-shrinking group of people is where I fit in.
Let me tell you there is nothing like the special feeling of walking around a town where you can point out all of the buildings where your ancestors once lived, the house where my great-great-grandfather opened his first business, the exact balcony where my great-grandparents met and fell in love, the place where my granny used to go partying and dancing while being chaperoned by her brothers, the streets and corners where my mom. would play in as a little girl. They are all the same streets and buildings I have walked by every day of my life since I can remember.
As you can see, Antigua is more than just my home town and I’m always talking about it so get ready to see a lot of blog posts about it. Hopefully, you will fall in love with it too.
